EDLC's Archives Service collects and preserves the historical records of East Dunbartonshire, its people and organisations, for the benefit of current and future generations.

Our archives cover the towns of Kirkintilloch, Lenzie, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie, Westerton, Lennoxtown, Milton of Campsie, Torrance, Baldernock and Twechar.  

Our Archives Service

We have over 300 archive collections dating from the 1500s to the 21st century, and our online catalogue contains over 17,000 items.

Some collection highlights include:

Council minutes and reports - East Dunbartonshire Council, Strathkelvin District Council, Milngavie & Bearsden District Council, and the Burghs of Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch, Bearsden and Milngavie.

Poor law records – for the parishes of Kirkintilloch, Cadder, Campsie, New Kilpatrick and Baldernock see our poor relief research guide.

Burial records - for Old Aisle Cemetery, Kirkintilloch and New Kilpatrick Cemetery, Bearsden see our burials research guide.

Valuation rolls - for annual lists of properties, their owners/tenants see our valuation rolls research guide.

Voters rolls – some 19th century voters rolls but mainly from 1970s onwards.

Building plans – for building plans submitted for approval to the Dean of Guild Courts or Building Control see our building plans research guide.

Businesses - Lion Foundry, Star Foundry (Southbank Ironworks), J & J Hay boatbuilders, Flexible Ducting Ltd, Sister Laura’s Infant Food Co Ltd and M&C Switchgear Ltd.

Individuals and families - Robert Macaulay Stevenson (artist), James F McEwan (transport historian – railway and shipping), Jenny Coutts (first female provost of Kirkintilloch), Peter Mackenzie (reformer and editor), Gartshore & Woodhall estates, family correspondence and photographs.

Clubs and societies - West of Scotland Rugby Club, Girlguiding Dunbartonshire, Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir, Allander Rotary Club, Kirkintilloch & District Society of Antiquaries, Milngavie Women’s Guild, Kirkintilloch Junior Choir, Caurnie Angling Club and Westerton Garden Suburb.

Access to the archives is currently by pre-booked appointment between 10am-5pm Monday to Friday at:

If you aren’t able to visit us, our staff can carry out up to 30 minutes research for you for free. You also have the option of purchasing additional research time at £12.50 per half hour (up to a max of two hours) see EDLC tickets.
