About

Please note, Bearsden Library is temporarily closed until further notice due to ongoing essential works.

For more information, visit the News section of the Council website and follow us on X and Facebook.

In the meantime, library services and resources are available in the other libraries throughout East Dunbartonshire. Bearsden library users unable to access our other libraries can use the Book Drop box in the Office of New Kilpatrick Church, Mon-Fri 9am-12pm. Our Connect and Collect service is also available. If you are interested and cannot access our other libraries, email westerton@eastdunbarton.gov.uk or call Westerton Library on 0141 943 0780.

The opening hours at Westerton Library have been extended and will remain so during the closure period. The additional opening hours are Wednesday, 10am until 8pm, and Saturday, 10am until 5pm (closed for lunch, 1230-1.30pm).

Bearsden Library opened within Bearsden Community Hub in 2017, after relocating from Brookwood Villa.

Accessible & inclusive information

We have developed a range of resources to help you prepare for your visit. The resources are aimed at making the centre more autism-friendly; however, the resources can be beneficial to anyone that might like some extra information before they come.

Resources

We would like to thank Andrew Kerr from Vorpal for providing the voiceover for the video.

If you have any questions about these resources, or if you think something should be changed, then please contact the Local Area Co-ordinators:

The library is a safe place to spend time. You can read books, newspapers, or e-magazines, or you can use the free WiFi on your own phone, tablet or laptop. We also have laptops you can use in the Library, although there are rules about what you are allowed to watch on them. If you are not sure what you can or cannot watch on library laptops then you can ask library staff. It’s free to use the laptops, but you have to pay to print or photocopy. Lots of reading groups meet in the library too, and if you want to set up your own group you can ask about using one of the Library’s rooms by emailing: libraries@eastdunbarton.gov.uk

You can use your library card to borrow up to 20 books in any East Dunbartonshire library.  We do have a very small selection of video games and DVDs, but they cost £1.60 to borrow, and you have to be 16 or over to borrow them.  You can keep them for up to 3 weeks before you need to bring it back.  If the item you’ve borrowed hasn’t been requested by somebody else then you can call, go online, or use the Libraries’ app to renew them which means you can keep it for another 3 weeks - you can do that up to 4 times.  If you forget, we will remind you by email.

Don’t worry if a book does get damaged or lost.  We know that accidents happen.

You can search on the library catalogue to find out what we have in stock.  You can also reserve the book you want to make sure that it’s ready to collect when you visit, or you can request that it’s moved to your nearest library.  If none of our libraries have the book that you want, you can suggest that we buy it.

You can also use your library card to sign in to our online library services

If you want to borrow eBooks, you need the membership number that’s on the front of your library card, and the pin number that was set up when you joined the library. If you don’t know your pin number, email: libraries@eastdunbarton.gov.uk or ask in your local library.

You can borrow eBooks at Borrowbox. The easiest way to do this is to download the app.

Some people also like to listen to audiobooks.  You can borrow audiobooks on CD or as a pre-loaded ’playaway’, or you can borrow e-audiobooks which download straight to your personal device.

If you like reading newspapers or magazines, you can borrow these through PressReader.  We do have some ‘real’ newspapers in the Library, but there’s a far bigger selection if you read online.

If you have any questions, you can email libraries@eastdunbarton.gov.uk or you can DM on social media through Facebook or Twitter @EDLC_Culture.

You can join by asking a member of Library staff when you visit, or by using the online membership form. Once you have applied online, you will need to collect your membership card from your chosen library.

You need to provide a form of proof of your name and address such as a utility bill or driving license.

People under 16 need to have their membership signed by a parent or guardian when collecting their card.

To stop anyone borrowing books on your account, we encourage library users to bring their card with them, or ask for a replacement if it gets lost. However, if you forget your card and you want to borrow books or use a computer, you can show library staff a piece of identification with your name on it, like a bank card.

We find the quietest times are in the evenings, roughly between 5-8pm. The noisiest periods are when there are story times for babies and toddlers. Sometimes there are also school visits in the Library, which can also be noisy. If you’d like, you can call the Library before you visit on 0141 777 3021, to check if there’s anything happening that day.

Don’t be worried about asking a member of Library staff for help if you’ve got any questions.

Members of staff will wear a ‘Cultural Assistant’ badge.

They can help you if you want some reading suggestions or if there is something that you don’t understand.

Some of our Libraries are classed as ‘Community Hubs’, and also share a building with East Dunbartonshire Council Customer Service staff which can be a bit confusing, but whoever you speak to should point you in the right direction for the Library.
