Everyone is welcome to visit us in Archives & Local Studies to search for information, and we have staff on hand to help you during your visit, plus detailed research guides to get you started.

Remote enquiry service information

However, if you aren’t able to visit us in person, we also offer a Remote Enquiry Service. Perhaps you live too far away, don’t have time to come in yourself or would simply rather we searched for you. Just give us details of what you would like to find out and our specialist staff will search our collections, and let you know what we find.

You can use the remote enquiry service to delve into your family history, discover the local history of your area, uncover the history of your house, reminisce about past workplaces, shops, schools or clubs, or to answer a specific question.

We will spend up to 30 minutes searching for you, completely free of charge, and get back to you with the results.

If you’d like us to spend longer searching for you, we have recently added an option to extend the free 30 minutes search time. For £12.50 per additional half hour we can spend up to a maximum of two hours searching on your behalf (this is in line with other Scottish Archive and Local Studies Services).

You may wish to buy extra search time if you:

  • Need staff to search across a wide range of archives and local studies sources e.g. for a house history enquiry
  • Want us to look up information on more than one person e.g. school records for several children
  • Are trying to find the original building plans of your house
  • Are searching for the burial locations of multiple individuals.

If you would like to use our remote enquiry service, please contact us with your question(s).

You can phone us on 0141 777 3142 or write to us at:

I'm really delighted with this, thanks very much for going to the trouble - and for how fast you were able to find it for us. [She] will be over the moon to see it, thanks again.
